While researching online I found myself comparing all sewing machines to the machine I learned to sew on back in the 1970′s. Back then, my parents owned a fabric store and my dad set out to purchase the best machine of the time- a Bernina. I remember the whole family drove an hour to Sacramento to look at the Bernina. The purchase must have been significant because I remember spending the better part of an afternoon at the store. The machine had to be ordered and we returned a few weeks later to pick it up. I sewed my first projects on that machine and I remember my Home EC teacher being very impressed with the name Bernina. My mom still has that machine today. To me, Bernina is a name that is synonymous with sewing machine quality.

What do I want in a sewing machine? First it needs to be solidly built. I’d be happy if I never need to buy another machine. I’d like the ability to sew well on a wide variety of fabrics and thicknesses. I want a beautiful straight stitch since that’s what I sew 99% of the time. Buttonholes are about as fancy as I get, so no need for embroidery. That’s about it- really. I’ll keep my computer and my sewing separate thank you very much.

My Brother XL 2022 has just about given up. I bought the sewing machine before my daughter was born in 1992. I didn’t pay a lot for it and although it was nothing special it’s been a pretty good machine. In the past 16 years I’ve sewed many projects on it including my daughter’s and my son’s crib sets, many outfits, curtains for our camper trailer and home, several Halloween costumes, and of course many mending projects as well. Right now the presser foot sits at permanent angle. It must have been damaged during a move or in storage- I don’t really remember. I do know that although I can still sew on it, it’s just not enjoyable. I’m at the point where this machine isn’t worth investing in, and I’d really like a new machine.
